Guardians of the Old Town Hall, a not for profit Community Interest Company(CIC) has been set up in order to renovate Weymouth’s Old Town Hall. The Old Town Hall is a Tudor Grade II listed building situated near the local Council Offices.
The Guardians of the Old Town Hall have a period of two years, commencing mid 2009, to renovate the Grade II listed building which will bring the disused building back into community use. Weymouth & Portland Borough council lease the hall to the Guardians, the renovations forming a condition of the lease.
Much of this work is being carried out on a voluntary basis, some sponsorship coming from local businesses and community groups. The Guardians continue to require voluntary help in order to carry out the renovations and would like to encourage businesses and community groups to support this local legacy project.
By 2012 the Guardians of the Old Town Hall anticipate that the hall will become a local tourist attraction incorporating an arts and heritage centre. The heritage centre will focus on local history, particularly the English Civil War and the battle of Weymouth known as the Crabchurch Conspiracy. The arts centre will run alongside the heritage centre supporting local artists by providing an arts hub, gallery and performance space as well as various work shops and art events.
Guardians of the Old Town Hall believe that community is at the heart of this project and there are major social, health, economic and environmental benefits in developing and participation in arts and cultural activities.
